Police ID man shot at I-79 rest stop in July

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- A man shot by Bridgeport police after an apparent domestic dispute at an Interstate 79 rest stop last month has been identified.

Police Chief John Walker said the man one of his officers shot was 23-year-old Marion County resident Justin Echols.

The Exponent Telegram said police were called to the rest area in the early-morning hours of July 18, and Echols showed a handgun when confronted by police.

Walker said Echols ignored commands to drop the gun and instead raised it. An officer fired one shot, seriously wounding Echols. Officers later found the gun had a full clip and a round in the chamber.

Walker said Wednesday Echols recovered from his injuries and has been released from a hospital. He has not been charged with any crime.
