Fayette sheriff: Employee embezzled $30K
FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. -- A Fayette County Sheriff's Department secretary created and maintained false receipt books to embezzle $30,000, police said.
Cheryl Lynn Gray, 42, of Oak Hill, was charged with embezzlement, falsifying accounts and two counts of forgery Friday.
Sheriff's detectives learned money turned up missing from the department's front office Thursday. It was later learned that Gray, an employee of two years, had taken money from an account to collect payments for concealed weapons permits, Fayette County Sheriff Steve Kessler said in a news release.
Gray allegedly submitted fake receipts and reports to the sheriff's tax office within the past several months. Gray is cooperating with the investigation and has been fired, according to the release. She was arraigned in Fayette County Magistrate Court and later released on a $2,500 bond.
