Couple faces charges over meth in motel room

By Staff reports

NITRO, W.Va. -- A couple was arrested late Wednesday after allegedly trying to make methamphetamine in a Nitro motel room.

Nitro police and officers from the Metro Drug Unit went to the Economy Inn motel at 4115 1st Ave. at about 11:30 p.m. to investigate an anonymous drug tip, according to Maj. David Richards of the Nitro Police Department.

Officers went to Room 206 at the motel and knocked on the door, where they noticed an odor consistent with meth manufacture, Richards said. They then got a search warrant and allegedly found a meth lab in the motel room, Richards said.

Richard Carr, 39, of Poca River Road and Atessa Jarrell, 35, of Princeton were both arrested and charged with attempting to operate a clandestine drug lab. They were in the Western Regional Jail this morning awaiting arraignment in Putnam County Magistrate Court.

Richards said the motel is open today, but Room 206 is closed. Hotel managers will be required to clean the room and have it checked for contamination before it can be reopened.
