State teacher wins character educator award

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Mineral County Alternative School teacher has been named the state's Character Educator of the Year.

Diana Sutherland was honored Wednesday at a West Virginia Board of Education meeting in Charleston.

She established a character education class that encourages her middle school students to talk freely, dissect problems and find solutions. Character education emphasizes trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, caring, citizenship and fairness.

The alternative school serves students with severe disabilities and those who have been expelled.
