Groups, businesses offer vets benefits on, around Veterans Day

By Staff reports

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Veterans and other military personnel are being offered free opportunities as a thank you for their service and sacrifices.

Clay Center admission

In celebration of Veterans Day, all active, reserve and retired military personnel will receive free admissions to the museum and the film and planetarium shows Nov. 11 at the Clay Center.

Guests learn about Newton's laws of motion in "Roll Drop Bounce," the latest traveling exhibit in the Mylan Explore-atory. Showing on the giant screen is a film about one of the earth's most undiscovered territories, "Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure." "Harvest Skies" is the planetarium show.

A military ID or other proof of service is needed for the free admission.

For more information on Clay Center programs and exhibits, visit www.theclaycenter.org or call 304-561-3570. Clay Center museum hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.

Lunch at T.G.I Friday's

The chain restaurant T.G.I. Friday's will honor the nation's military by offering a free lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 12 to those who have served or are serving in the armed forces.

Proof of service is required, such as a U.S. Uniform Services ID Card, a U.S. Uniform Services Retired ID Card, a current leave and earnings statement, veterans organization card, a DD214, a photograph in uniform or being in uniform.

Free safety course

During November, AARP is offering a free driver safety class to active and retired military personnel and their spouses.

Classes are limited in size, so those interested should call early to find a class that fits their needs. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

After signing up for a course, participants should bring a valid military ID to the classroom -- such as discharge papers (DD Form 214), American Legion cards, dependent ID cards or Veterans of Foreign Wars cards. Participating veterans will be asked to complete a veteran participation form as part of the course, which will be provided onsite by the instructor.

To locate a course, visit www.aarp.org/findacourse or call 888-227-7669. For more information, visit www.aarp.org/veterans or email drive@aarp.org.

Free boat launch

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is granting military veterans and current military service members free boat launch access Nov. 11.

The day-use charges are being waived at the 18 boating lakes the corps operates in West Virginia. The fee waiver requires only a verbal confirmation of service.
