Donation scams begin over officers who were shot

By Staff reports

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Kanawha County officials are warning local residents to beware of scams asking for money for the families of three law enforcement officers shot earlier this week in Wallback.

Capt. Sean Crosier of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department said deputies already have received two complaints from residents who got phone calls asking for cash or credit card numbers for donations to support the families of "fallen comrades."

Crosier believes the calls are referring to the shootings of West Virginia State Police troopers Cpl. Marshall Bailey and Eric Workman and Roane County Sheriff's Deputy John Westfall, who were shot Tuesday night during a traffic stop at Wallback. Bailey was killed, Workman died Friday and Westfall is recovering from surgery.

"This is a scam," Crosier said, "as no legitimate agency would be asking for a credit card number or cash."
