Keyser, Shinnston recognized for encouraging play

KEYSER, W.Va. -- Two West Virginia cities have been recognized for encouraging children to play.

Keyser and Shinnston were named Tuesday as "Playful City USA" communities. They are among 213 communities nationwide cited by KaBoom!, a Washington-based nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing play back into children's lives.

The group recognizes communities that have taken innovative approaches to increase the quantity and quality of play and playgrounds.

The organization says the Keyser City Council recently approved an Adopt-a-Park program for all play spaces within the city limits. The city also has a facilities use agreement with schools.

Shinnston was recognized for working on a survey to determine how residents want to improve the parks system and activities, and for sponsoring activities including family swim nights and a bicycle rodeo.
