CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Twenty-four people were honored Tuesday at the ninth annual West Virginia Civil Rights Day celebration. The honorees were chosen by the West Virginia Human Rights Commission.
Robert S. Baker, chairman of the Access to Justice Commission for the state Supreme Court and a former director of the Appalachian Research and Defense Fund.
Bonnie Brown, House of Delegates member from Kanawha County.
Marion Elaine Jones Capehart, former state Human Rights Commission member and McDowell County teacher.
Hazo W. Carter Jr., president of West Virginia State University.
Earl Eugene "Gene" Corum, former West Virginia University football player, coach, professor and administrator.
The Rev. Darrell W. Cummings, chairman of the state Human Rights Commission and a longtime minister in the Wheeling area.
Elmer H. Day Jr., executive director of the Beckley Human Rights Commission.
Lt. Col. Kenneth L. Hale, equal employment manager for the West Virginia National Guard.
James Lonnie Haygood, longtime Logan County teacher.
Richard J. "Dick" Henderson, former House of Delegates member from Kanawha County.
Allan N. Karlin, Morgantown lawyer and past president of the West Virginia Association for Justice.
