CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Pennsylvania man died and his wife was critically injured Tuesday after the minivan he was driving made an abrupt swerve and was hit by a vehicle coming in the opposite direction on Interstate 79 near Clarksburg.

William A. Seigworth, 80, of Oil City, Pa., was driving south at about 11:15 a.m. when he "abruptly swerved," according to State Police Trooper A.J. Mendez. Seigworth drove into the median and then into the northbound lane near Anmoore.

A Ford F-150 truck that was traveling north struck the van on the passenger side. The van flew into the air and landed on an elevated embankment alongside the Interstate, Mendez said.

Seigworth died in the wreck; his wife, Maureen, was in critical condition at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown on Tuesday afternoon.

Mendez said officers are still trying to determine what happened. It could have been a heart attack, but the van was filled with items, including golf clubs, that might have shifted, he explained. A member of the State Police accident reconstruction team from Morgantown is also working on the accident.

Mendez said the driver of the Ford truck, a Clarksburg resident who sustained minor injuries, was "not to blame" for the accident and fatality.
