Wirt County assessor accused of intimidation

ELIZABETH, W.Va. -- The Wirt County assessor is facing a misdemeanor charge of intimidating two of her employees.

A criminal complaint obtained Tuesday accuses Deborah Hennen, 52, of bullying and threatening to fire deputy assessor Rosemary Donaldson and yelling at deputy assessor Terri Valentine over a police investigation involving the assessor's office.

State Police launched an investigation in August, but the nature of that probe is unclear. Special prosecutor Josh Downing did not immediately return a phone call.

Monday's complaint filed in Wirt County Magistrate Court also alleges that on Nov. 2, Hennen accused Valentine of being the person who prompted the investigation.

State Police Sgt. A.D. Nichols, who signed the criminal complaint, declined to provide further information.

Hennen has not yet retained an attorney, according to court officials. Attempts to reach her Tuesday by telephone at her home and at the office, and by e-mail were unsuccessful.

Hennen has been the county assessor for about 12 years, said County Commissioner Robert E. Lowe Jr. He declined further comment.
