Online college reports higher 3rd-quarter gain

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- Online university company American Public Education says its third-quarter profit rose more than 31 percent on higher course registrations.

American Public says it earned $5 million, or 27 cents per share, in the period. The Charles Town-based company earned $3.8 million, or 20 cents per share, in the third quarter of 2008.

Revenue increased to $36.5 million, from $27.4 million in third-quarter 2008.

American Public focuses on military and public employees through its American Military and American Public universities. It offers 76 degrees in military studies, public health, business administration and other subjects.
