Pranksters' fire destroys vacant buildings in Cabin Creek
Advertiser

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A fire set as a prank Thursday got out of hand and destroyed three vacant buildings.

Lt. Sean Crosier of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department said a fire was reported on Dry Branch Road in Cabin Creek about 11:30 p.m. The fire was apparently set by pranksters in the middle of the road, but spread to nearby buildings. Crosier said two office trailers like those used by contractors and a mobile home were destroyed by the blaze.

All three buildings were vacant, he said.

Other than the Dry Branch fire, Crosier said, trick-or-treat night Thursday was fairly sedate. He said deputies received fewer than 15 calls about trick-or-treat pranks.

"For a trick-or-treat night, it's phenomenal," he said.

Sheriff Mike Rutherford stepped up patrols in the county for Thursday night's Halloween festivities, concentrating particularly on the eastern end of Kanawha County, where pranksters historically cut down trees and set fires for Halloween. Crosier said extra patrols would be out again Friday and Saturday.

Although patrols will be heavy in the eastern part of the county, "We still have plenty of units to go to the north, west, even Loudendale and Alum Creek," Crosier said. "We're going to create a feeling of omnipresence."

Maybe if some of the coal $$ pouring out of Cabin Creek were put back into the community, the kids would have something to do instead of having to find stuff to get into. I grew up on Cabin Creek. However, we had things to do then because coal wasn't flourishing like it sort of is now. You can't ride bikes along the road any longer because of the coal truck traffic. You can't play in the creek any longer because its full of waste from the mines. When you go out on the mountain, you can only go so far until you reach a strip mine and have to go back to get out of danger. The kids don't have a community center; the elementary school won't even have a Halloween party for the kids. What else is there to do? "Let's go set fire to a couch or some tires or maybe even a car! Nobody cares what we do. We live in Cabin Creek, the land of the forgotten".

They aren't pranksters.

THEY ARE CRIMINALS, NOTHING MORE.

And there is no god.

Knows nothing is right about God being the only thing omnipresent. But since He seems to have let Cabin Creek and a good portion of eastern Kanawha County go to "hell in a hand basket" in resent years, maybe Lt Crosiers attempts at "omnipresence" is a good thing. More power to law enforcement for trying to stem the tide of crime in that area. Kudos KCSD
