Morgantown gets grant to map crime
Advertiser

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- A $150,000 federal grant will help the city of Morgantown analyze why and where crime is happening so police can work to prevent it.

West Virginia University says the grant from the National Institute of Justice is the first of its kind in West Virginia, funding a partnership between city and WVU police.

WVU geography professor Greg Elmes and doctoral student George Roedl won the grant and will use geomapping tools to help them track what happens in both departments' jurisdictions.

The goal is to identify emerging crime trends and help police not only inform the public of the problem but also solicit possible solutions.

Wow, that's a ton of money.

If you wanted to map every crime ever reported or committed and the arrests, and track patterns, you could get an online map for Morgantown's citizens with date and crime filters for just hundreds of dollars through a number of great companies.

GovMapper http://www.govmapper.com and Crime Reports are 2 that come to mind. GovMapper even has a mobile version, RSS data feeds, and a programming API.
