Battle over coal moves into Raleigh classrooms
Advertiser

BECKLEY, W.Va.  -- The Friends of Coal Ladies Auxiliary wrapped up its first Coal in the Classroom program in the Raleigh County public schools with a field trip this week.

Its pro-coal curriculum was piloted at a private elementary school last year.

On Tuesday, Stratton Elementary School's fourth-grade class traveled to the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine for a firsthand look at an underground mine.

It's the first class in the West Virginia public school system to host the program. With the help of local retired teachers, the curriculum was developed by the Friends of Coal Ladies Auxiliary. Regina Fairchild is the chairwoman.

"We just make it as lighthearted as possible but informative,'' she said. "We just want to educate them about our vital resource in our area and in the United States.''

The program consists of a coloring book that illustrates how coal is mined underground and at surface mines. It also shows how coal is burned for energy we use in electricity. And you can find phrases like "The advantages of coal'' and "Why coal is important,'' as well.

Some environmental groups say the Friends of Coal program doesn't belong in public schools.

Assistant Superintendent of Raleigh County Schools Janet Lilly says they are willing to look at any curriculum from the environmental community.

"We really looked at the curriculum and what they planned to do,'' she said. "We're open to any group that's willing to do the match and present the curriculum, and if there's someone that objects to the curriculum that's out there with the auxiliary, we'd be glad to look at their curriculum, too.''

Unbelievable.
Coal is an important part of West Virginia's economy. On that I think we could all agree, whether we love coal or hate it. Students should learn about the economics of coal.
I noticed someone on here who appears to think things haven't changed since 1920. Possibly not for someone still waiting for the revolution of the proletariat.
West Virginia is a coal mining state. I am proud of our miners and I am proud of these women who are doing this out of their own pocket. This organization visits the sick and children in hospitals, they donate hours of their time to helping in their communities. They have turned the annual Friends of Coal Auto Fair in Beckley into one of the premiere festivals of the summer.
This curriculum is balanced. I haven't heard anything said about the enviro's stated goal to put an anti-coal curriculum in the classroom - a story which appeared in this paper last week.
All I can say is the critics are pathetic and ridiculously petty.

One could, but logic usually doesn't fare too well on these MTR threads.

Rational, to carry a step further, could one not suggest it is appropriate to hate the country if a relative died while defending said country? A cop killed while on duty, justifies the sibling being a murdered or robber? Can most things not be so justified?

The miners I have associated with chose that employment in the industry because they could stay in area, liberal paydays and benefits as well as simple enjoyment of the job.

"I can point to the exact day when I came to utterly despise the company. "

That is a sad story. I can see why you hated your dad's employer, but I don't see how you are able transfer that to a hatred of all coal companies, and even further to a determination to end MTR.
