Massey Energy reports $16.5 million income

CHARLESTON, W.Va. --  Massey Energy reported $16.5 million in net income, or 19 cents per share, during the three months ending Sept. 30, according to an 8-K report Massey filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday morning.

Massey produced 8.7 million tons of coal during those three months, compared to 10.3 million tons during the same period in 2008.

But revenues from coal dropped to $535.5 million during this year's third quarter, down from $666.4 million in 2008.

During the past three months, Massey earned a "cash margin" of $11.98 per ton of coal, which sold at an average of $61.79 per ton.

Massey's new SEC filing also reported continued global economic weaknesses are hurting international coal markets and U.S coal producers.

Today, Massey controls most of this country's metallurgical coal reserves and exports much more of that coal than any other company.

The 8-K filing also reported:

| Utilities in the southeastern U.S. burned 18 percent less coal during the first eight months of 2009, compared to the same period in 2008.

| Coal stockpiles at electric power plants increased by 69 percent since August 2008.

| Global crude steel output dropped by 18 percent during the first eight months of 2009, according to the World Steel Association.

| Coal production in Central Appalachia dropped by 11 percent during the first nine months this year.

jkotcon - didn't you read the article? It said Massey's revenues had dropped to $535.5 M from $666.4 M a year ago. That means less work done therefore less people to do it.

You just look for any excuse to hate on Massey - with disregard to facts.

Gheez - take a basic accounting class

Massey has missed a golden opportunity to enhance their image. Earlier this year, they laid off over 300 miners due to "market conditions". Now it turns out that all those jobs were lost simpy to boost stockholder profits. Think how much they could have earned in employee loyalty and good PR if they had kept those miners employed during the recession and perhaps even put them to work on mineland reclamation. Instead, it looks like they have boosted their own profits on the backs of their own laid off employees. Massey likes to blame the environmentalists for taking jobs away, but it was actually just the coal company bosses who laid off the miners, and for no other reasons than greed. Now, when Massey talks about protecting jobs, and threats from environmentalists, they merely look greedy, hypocritical, self-serving, and mean-spirited. I guess if the shoe fits...
