Illnesses force Gilmer County to cancel classes

GLENVILLE, W.Va. -- High absenteeism has forced the Gilmer County Schools to cancel classes.

Superintendent John Bennett said he canceled school on Thursday because 240 out of 429 students were absent the day before. About a fourth of the staff also was ill.

Bennett said daily absences normally total about 25.

No classes were planned today because it was originally scheduled as an instructional support and enhancement day.

Classes should resume on Monday.

Bennett said he hopes the long weekend will give students and staff members time to recover.
