CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Lincoln County woman pleaded guilty in federal court Wednesday to stealing Social Security benefits, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced.

Frances Maynard, 39, of Ranger, admitted that she applied for survivor's benefits, listing a dead person as the father of a minor child, a news release states. She knew that the dead man was not the father, and fraudulently collected more than $67,400 between 2000 and 2008, according to the release.

Maynard faces up to 10 years in prison when sentenced by U.S. District Judge John T. Copenhaver Jr. on Jan. 7. She also must pay restitution.

In other federal court news, a grand jury indicted a Nitro man on charges that he assaulted a U.S. marshal and tampered with a witness.

Eric Scott Gillispie, 29, allegedly resisted a federal agent attempting to serve a judicial writ on April 21. The indictment also charges Gillispie with threatening and intimidating a witness in Beckley on Aug. 13.

If convicted, Gillispie faces up to 21 years in prison.

In a separate case, the grand jury indicted a Beckley woman on charges that she possessed more than 5 grams of crack cocaine with the intent to distribute.

If convicted, Marland E. Willis, 44, faces between five and 40 years in prison.
