Ceredo ponders repeal of ban on pit bulls

CEREDO, W.Va. -- Dog owners, animal shelter workers and others are asking the Ceredo City Council to consider repealing a town-wide ban on owning pit bull terriers.

A petition drive has generated about 70 signatures in the Wayne County town, and opponents of the ban packed City Hall on Monday to speak against it.

Steve Hardwick has received a citation from the city ordering him to give up his pit bull. Hardwick says that would be like giving up a child.

Sue Brown of Little Victories Animal Rescue Group in Barboursville hopes the ordinance can be changed to require muzzles for the dogs instead of banning them outright.

Council members tabled the question, saying they want to study the breed and meet with Brown before making a decision.
