Anniversaries/homecomings

The Open Bible Temple Independent Baptist Church, Powellton, will have homecoming services beginning with Sunday school at 10 a.m. on Sunday, followed by the morning worship and lunch around 12:30 p.m. There will not be an evening service.

Fisher Chapel United Methodist Church will have its annual homecoming beginning at 10 a.m. on Sunday. The Rev. Dr. Earl Cochran will speak at 11 a.m. Lunch will be served at noon. Worship in song will begin at 1:30 p.m. Special singing by The Revelators from Logan and other local singers will be featured.

New First Missionary Baptist Church of Kanawha City will celebrate the fourth anniversary of Pastor Ricardo and Jeannie Flippin on Oct. 10 and 11 at the church. Pastor Philip Copney and congregation of United Baptist Church of Beckley will be guests at 3 p.m. Dinner will be served following the morning service. Minister Linda Jackson will be guest speaker for First Lady Jeannie Flippin at 6 p.m. on Oct. 10.

The Community Tabernacle Church, will have its homecoming services on Sunday at the church located on W.Va. 34, Liberty. Sunday school will be 9:45 a.m. and the morning worship service will start at 11 a.m. Dinner will be around noon. An afternoon service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Singing will be provided by the Jay Humphreys Trio and the Bowlings. Preaching will be provided by The Rev. Billy Casto. There will be no Sunday night service.

Reamer Hill Community Church on Leatherwood Road in Clendenin will have its homecoming services on Sunday. Guest soloist at 1 p.m. will be Myrtle Beets.

Sunlight Baptist Church, Island Branch, Sissonville will have its annual homecoming service beginning 10 a.m. on Sunday. Gary Blackwell will be the guest speaker in the morning service. Shirley Kay will sing. Lunch will be served at noon. Afternoon services will be Don Blackwell will be speaking and One Foot Closer will be singing. Bring a covered dish.

Simpson Memorial United Methodist Church will celebrate its 143rd anniversary at the 10:45 a.m. worship service on Sunday at the church, 607 Shrewsbury St. Simpson Choir and the youth mime troupe will be in concert at 6 p.m. A reception will follow. For information, call 304-343-1873.

The Fifth Avenue Church of God in South Charleston is celebrating 90 years of ministry. Events include: Oct. 17, noon to 4 p.m., family picnic at Little Creek Park, Shelter #12. The Chuck Taylor Band will provide music. There will be games with prizes for children, inflatable obstacle course, cornhole tournament, good food and fellowship. Bring a dish to share; Oct. 18, 11 a.m., special speaker, the Rev. Danny Bryant, followed by lunch and a slide show of past and present pictures of church activities. Following lunch, a Southern gospel concert featuring the Bound for Heaven Quartet from Parkersburg, singer Cindy Lemon and Ron Pauley, pianist. Gift baskets will be given throughout the celebration. Liberty Missionary Baptist Church announces its 76th church anniversary/homecoming will begin with a kickoff concert at 6 p.m. Oct. 31. Guests will be area groups. The climax service will be held on Nov. 1. For more information, call 304-344-8661.

Church of God MPG of Truth will have its 17th pastoral anniversary services for Bishop Michael D. Austin and first lady Mattie Austin Wednesday through Oct. 11 at the church, 1001 Hendrix Ave. Service dates and times are: Wednesday, 7 p.m.; Thursday, 7 p.m.; Friday, 7 p.m.; Oct. 10, noon; and Oct. 11, noon. Miscellaneous

A History Alive! presentation, featuring Harriet Tubman, leader of the Underground Railroad, will be presented at 7 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, 508 Second Ave., South Charleston. Ilene Evans will portray Harriet Tubman. The event is sponsored by the West Virginia Humanities Council.

Christ Church United Methodist on Quarrier and Morris streets, will hold its annual rummage sale from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at the church. Meals and baked goods will also be for sale. The church is handicap-accessible.

A fall festival and an outdoor gospel sing will be held Oct. 10 at Family Worship Center, 11819 MacCorkle Ave., Chesapeake. The fall festival will start at 4 p.m. and the sing starts at 6:30 p.m. Redemption Road Band, country gospel group from Versailles, Ind., will sing. In case of rain, the event will be moved inside the church.

Trinity United Methodist Church, will have new and gently used items, baked goods, hot dogs, soft drinks and both baking and snacking nuts available for purchase from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Oct. 31 at the church, 2626 Pennsylvania Ave., W.Va. 119, Elk River Road, off the Mink Shoals, exit of Interstate 79. Abundant Life Ministries, 1534 Washington St. E., will host Oktoberfest, "Sharing the Harvest," from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at the church. New and like-new items will be available at discount prices. There will also be a hot dog sale. Call the church at 304-342-0058 for more information.

A flea market, hot dog and bake sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 10 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1600 Kanawha Blvd. E. Proceeds from this annual sale will be used to buy Christmas food baskets for those in need. The Women of the ELCA will also be selling homemade baked goods for their social outreach ministries. Carry-out will be available.

Sandy Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Aarons Fork Road, Elkview, will have a free one-day clothing pantry from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 10 at the church. Good, clean and fall/winter used clothing will be offered free for children, teens and adults. Shirts, blouses, pants, dresses, skirts, coats, jackets, sweaters, shoes and more will be offered. Sandy Grove Missionary Baptist Church will also have a happy Halloween trunk-and-treat event from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 31 at the church. Bring the kids and drive through for treats. St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Norwood Road will feature a blessing of the animals ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at the church. The public is invited to participate in the blessings for dogs, cats, birds, hamsters, etc. The Right Rev. W. Michie Klusmeyer, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of West Virginia, will perform the blessing following the closing of the 132nd annual Diocesan Convention. Non-pet owners are invited to participate. The Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association representatives will set up an adoption booth at the church.

Elizabeth Memorial United Methodist Church will have a blessing of the animals ceremony Sunday at the church on Oakwood Road. Pastor Dr. Frank Shomo will bless any kind of pet -- dogs, cats, hamsters, fish, etc. The Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association will bring dogs that are up for adoption. Bring donations of food, toys and rags for the animal shelter.

Bethel Baptist Church of Spring Hill will sponsor aerobic exercise classes at 9 a.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Steve Smarr is the instructor for the hour-long sessions.

The American Red Cross and Bethel Baptist Church of Spring Hill will sponsor a blood drive from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the church activity building, 5028 Kentucky St. Refreshments will be provided for donors. For information, call 304-768-7151.

Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church will have its annual October Feast<co> on Oct. 10. Dinner will be served from 1 to 3 p.m., followed by a concert by the New Joy Gospel Singers from Columbus, Ohio. Dress is casual. A love offering will be taken.

Liberty Missionary Baptist Church will have a chicken sale/fish fry at noon Oct. 24 on the church parking lot.

New Life Center's Leading Ladies Ministry presents "One Night with the King" women's conference on Friday at New Life Center in Cedar Grove,. A free dinner will be served from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The service starts at 7 p.m. The event is open to both women and men. New Life Praise Team will sing and Ignite Drama team will perform. Lana Calloway of HeartCry will be speaking. There will be door prizes and giveaways for the women attending.

Cross Lanes Bible Church will be hosting a Halloween alternative for children of all ages from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 29 at the church, 5442 Big Tyler Road, Cross Lanes. Bob Rhodes will be singing at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church's homecoming.

The Whisnants gospel group will appear in concert at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1401 Washington St. W.

Reach By Faith Ministries will present the third sing of the eighth annual Summersville Sings the Gospel 2009 series beginning 6 p.m. today in the Old Main Building auditorium, Old Main Drive, Summersville. Singers include Martha Bell, The Family Circle Singers, The Pathfinders and Joe Smith. Admission is free and a love offering will be received.

Nancy Joe and Larry Kidd will sing at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Lighthouse Country Restaurant in Dunbar for a fundraiser for Country Hymn Time Radio. Event sponsor and emcee is Larry Duncan.
