Lawmakers study methadone clinics

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Sophia Grant has used methadone for more than 10 years to treat an addiction to painkillers. Eddy Brown has used it for 18 months.

They don't know how much longer they'll need the medication, they told lawmakers Tuesday. But both say it saved their lives.

West Virginia has nine for-profit methadone clinics, and legislators are examining how they work. The Legislature put a moratorium on new clinics in 2007.

Earlier this year, some lawmakers caused a stir when they proposed taxing methadone, which is used to treat addiction to drugs like OxyContin and heroin. Tax revenues would have funded addiction prevention, treatment and recovery programs.

The proposal failed, and some lawmakers are still worried that methadone clinics create a "revolving door" situation, where patients swap their addiction to one drug with another. They're also concerned about the growing number of deaths linked to methadone.

On Tuesday, Mark Parrino, president of the American Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence, told legislators that it's true that some people must take methadone the rest of their lives. But every individual situation is different, he said.

The drug has been exhaustively researched, he said.

Many of the deaths linked to methadone stem from its use as a painkiller, Parrino said. But he cautioned that even when used for addiction, it can be lethal when combined with alcohol and other drugs.

Parrino emphasized that methadone should be combined with services like addiction counseling.

"The medication is not treatment," he said. "It's a medication."

I want to inform RUKiddingme that no taxpayer is paying for our methadone. How is it you think taxpayers are footing the bill when the Methadone Maintenance Treatment Programs take cash only. You need to do your homework before you start making statements which are false-yours are because they do provide counseling. Believe me, If you attend a methadone program, you have to want to become clean because it isn't easy at all. First, you must have cash and they do not extend credit (a few may) and most people have to drive 30 minutes up to four hours or more one way just to dose and you must attend your counseling sessions and give drug screens every month. The first 90 days you have to come every day to dose and it is very difficult if you work to get up early and drive to dose each day and then go to work. If you maintain clean drug screens and make your counseling sessions and work your treatment program, you are allowed one take-home dose after 90 days. Take-homes are earned

What is wrong with you people? Alcohol has killed many and I agree if a person is under the influence of any medication and kills another then they should pay the price. I don't believe a person should drive and take methadone, or any other opiate until they know how they are going to react but I know from experience once you are stabilized on methadone, you can drive. Many patients abuse the drug and take more than they should just as many drink more alcohol than they should and get in the car and drive but I don't hear people fussing over shutting down the places which sell alcohol. Please tell me why not? You people don't want methadone maintenance treatment programs in your town but you certainly don't mind alcohol being sold ...there is no difference and it has been proven most of the deaths from methadone are not coming from the clinics but from the pain management offices. Methadone is a life-saving medication but if it is not taken correctly, yes, it can kill you.

I am really tired of hearing all of you put down methadone because it really shows just how ignorant you are. I am a pharmacist and sure there will always be people who abuse drugs but tell me what is the difference in abusing alcohol and methadone? Why aren't all of you making a hoopla over people driving under the influence of alcohol? Why I say to this WV Nurse are you making such a big deal over seeing one guy on methadone high? There will always be people who abuse any drug but it doesn't make the medication worthless and it has saved more lives than it has killed. I personally have done my research on it and besides that it saved my life because addiction is not a moral issue and you being a nurse should know this. I tried everything and nothing worked for me and if it had not been for methaodne I probably would be dead today. I became addicted because I had six surgeries within 2-4 years and was on a lot of narcotics. Now, I take it for pain and it is the only drug that works.

I of course forgot to tell everyone he was on his way back from the meth clinic. For his treatment. And it is totally legal to let them get that high and get on the road. I am amazed what the world is turning to. I tell you this if anything happens to one of my family member get hurt from someone driving back home from a treatment I will make an example of the state system. Because they will be responsible.
