CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Authorities have arrested a man and charged him with murder and first-degree arson related to a mobile home fire in July.

Scott Boyd Burgess, 44, of Powellton, is in the Southern Regional Jail, according to a press release from Fayette County Sheriff Steve Kessler.

Kessler said emergency officials responded to a call in Elk Ridge July 19. When they arrived, they found a mobile home occupied by Burgess fully engulfed by flames.

After the fire was put out, responders found the body of a man later identified as Edward Pritt, 30, of Powellton.

With the help of fire marshals, police determined that the fire was intentionally started, Kessler said.

They arrested Burgess late Friday without incident. Fayette County Detective R.K. Perdue II also believes that Burgess may be "connected to three previous residential structure fires that were determined to have been intentionally started."

Kessler is urging anyone with more information to call 304-574-4216.

Kessler said deputies also are investigating a shooting that happened early Saturday in Powellton.

Kessler said Michael Jackson, 30, of Smithers sustained multiple gunshot wounds from a shotgun. He was treated and released.

Kessler said the shooting appeared to be domestic in nature, and no one has been arrested.

In another section of the county near the Raleigh County line, deputies also were investigating an attempted break-in at The Corner gas station and restaurant in Pax.

A volunteer firefighter saw someone run from the station, and police found that someone had broken glass in the front door. Whoever tried to break into the station also sustained cuts because police found blood at the scene.

Police are looking for a while male who has a medium build and a thin beard. At the time he was spotted, the man also was wearing reflective blue and orange clothing.
