ST. ALBANS, W.Va. -- Concerned St. Albans citizens told City Council members Monday night about constant disturbances in the neighborhood of Dewitt Circle.
They reported people outside at all hours of the day drinking excessively, huffing paint, cursing loudly and fighting.
Emma Ellis of C Street referred to the spot as a "daycare for drunks" and expressed concern over her safety. She repeatedly asked council members for help.
Mike Miller of Fifth Avenue also complained that his children can no longer play in their backyard without "loud vulgar noise." He told council members and Police Chief Joe Crawford he would do anything he could to help alleviate the disturbances in his neighborhood.
Crawford said that police officers are called out to quell disturbances around Dewitt Circle every week. Both Crawford and council member John Bowles, chairman of council's Public Safety Committee, said that different efforts are being undertaken to break up these disturbances in the future.
Crawford also said that one of the houses around Dewitt Circle had been condemned recently after several methamphetamine labs were busted there. He then encouraged citizens to report every disturbance in the area to help police.
Monday's meeting was the first for several City Council members, who were elected in June.

I remember walking to my friend's house on Dewitt Circle, the sidewalk thick with Fall leaves the day that JFK died, hearing the mourning bells toll from the churches. Good luck to those who want to take the neighborhood back for healthy and safe living.
