A Charleston woman was charged with child neglect with injury Friday, after her four-year-old son shot himself in the leg.
CHARLESTON, W.Va -- A Charleston woman was charged with child neglect with injury Friday, after her four-year-old son shot himself in the leg.
Hannah Danielle Workman, 24, was arrested after she brought her toddler to CAMC Women and Children's Hospital around 10:30 a.m. Friday with a gunshot wound to his lower leg.
Workman told police that her boyfriend, a 16-year-old boy, brought the gun into her West Side home, according to the criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrates Court.
Workman's other child, a two-year-old, found the weapon under a couch and gave it to her four-old-son, according to the complaint.
The bullet entered the toddler's lower leg, exited the back of his leg, then lodged itself in his thigh, according to the complaint.
The toddler underwent surgery at CAMC Friday afternoon. His wound is not life threatening, said Chief Detective Sgt. Steve Cooper with the Charleston Police Department during a press conference Friday afternoon.
"We suspect, at this point, that it was accidental," Cooper said, "but everyone has a bunch of concerns because of the age of the child."
Police are searching for the 16-year-old male, who reportedly was in the house at the time of shooting, Cooper said.

"Apparently, he is in some sort of relationship with the 24-year-old," he said. "We are trying to find him for questioning. We're still piecing together evidence."
Charleston Police searched Workman's home on Hillcrest Drive on the West Side Friday afternoon.
Police found dirty diapers under the couch cushions in the living room and in the bedroom, and several windows in the children's rooms were knocked out, according to the criminal complaint.
The couch in the living room also smelled of urine, and there were dirty dishes with ants on them in the room, in addition to dirty dishes and water in the kitchen, according to the complaint.
Workman told police her children slept on the couch in the living room, according to the complaint.
She also told police she had put the gun on a shelf in the kitchen and gone to bed. She said her boyfriend must have moved the gun under the couch, according to the complaint.
In addition to the toddler who was shot, two other children, a two-year-old and an infant, also were in the house at the time of the shooting.
"It's important for people to remember that anytime there are children in the home, firearms need to be locked away," Cooper said.

The age of consent in W.Va. is 16. So statutory rape isn't a factor in this case. Not that it makes this any better.
