CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The latest U.S. Census population estimates show that Morgantown is now West Virginia's fourth-largest city.

Estimates released Wednesday show Morgantown's population grew by more than 2,900 residents between July 1, 2000, and July 1, 2008.

Population estimates recorded in 2000 placed Morgantown as the state's fifth-largest city, behind Wheeling. Now Wheeling is ranked fifth.

Charleston remains the state's largest city with more than 50,000 residents. But the Census Bureau estimates the capital city has lost more than 3,000 residents since July 1, 2000.
