Terra Alta policeman says he was fired for making arrests
Advertiser

TERRA ALTA, W.Va. -- A former Terra Alta police officer says he did his job well -- so well, that he believes it got him fired.

Michael Daff alleges in a lawsuit filed in Preston Circuit Court that he was fired from the police force in March for making too many arrests -- including arrests of elected officials' family members.

Daff, 36, now a police officer in Masontown, claims he was never written up or reprimanded in his roughly 11 months on the job.

He also says town officials told nearby police departments that he was fired for having a gambling problem. He says this caused him emotional distress. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.

Terra Alta Mayor Charles Feather and town attorney Sheila Williams declined to comment on the lawsuit.

In Terra Alta? As a long time resident of Preston County (14+ years) I can see it happening.

Police departments, especially small local P.D.'s, are political machines used by the people in power at any given time. Mostly, they are used to generate revenue for the city through tickets, fines and enforcement of unnecessary local laws. If we "lost" half the officers we would not miss them with the exception of fewer traffic tickets.

that sounds like it could happen.... arresting the wrong people.... and getting canned for it... including arrests of elected officials' family members.
