Kanawha resident wins OMEGA scholarship

Casey Wayne Jones, an employee of Sissonville Foodland, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the West Virginia Oil Marketers and Grocers Association (OMEGA) to begin his studies at West Virginia University. 

Jones, a graduate of Sissonville High School, is pursuing a degree in International Studies at WVU. He has been on the National Honor Roll throughout his high school career. He has been recognized for his commitment to his school in the field of service under the Student Recognition Program. He attended Mountaineer Boys State and has been active in the Young Democrats, the International Club and many other groups.

Kohl's stores recognize West Virginia volunteers

Kohl's Department Stores honored 13 state youth for the good deeds they performed in their communities, through volunteerism as part of the Kohl's Kids Who Care Scholarship Program. The students will receive $50 gift cards and recognition certificates from Kohl's for making a difference in their communities. The winners have the chance to receive additional scholarships at the regional and national levels. Kohl's plans to award more than $350,000 in scholarships and prizes this summer throughout the nation.

 The state winners included:

Taylor Garza, 17, Inwood; Sydney Hardy, 6, Moorefield; Hannah Little, 11, Ivydale; Kayla Loveless, 11, Harpers Ferry; Roger Luchuck, 18, Wallace; Jessie McPeek, 9, Pennsboro; Jonathan Ross, 11, Barboursville; Lauren Snyder, 18, Turtle Creek; Lauren Taylor, 18, Martinsburg; Kiana Turner, 11, Westover; Sara Wellman, 7, Wheeling; and Steven Williams, 18, Bluefield.

State Fair names scholarship recipients

The State Fair of West Virginia has announced recipients of the 2009 State Fair scholarships. Scholarships are renewable up to four years.

Recipients of the $1,000 awards include:

Katherine Gum, Jane Lew; Mark Lemons, Asbury; and Kathryn Grantham, Kearneysville.
