Anniversary

  • Community Missionary Baptist Church, 920 Amity Drive, will celebrate its anniversary at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Guest speaker will be the Rev. Shelly Bausley, pastor of Pilgrim Home Missionary Baptist Church, along with his choirs and congregation. The theme is "Trust in the Lord in 2009, With All Thy Heart." Dinner will immediately follow the worship service.

  • St. Christopher Episcopal Church will offer a summer day camp, July 6-12, for children ages 6-13 at its location, 821 Edgewood Drive. There is no charge. Language arts, fun with numbers, music performance, art, architecture and engineering concepts using LEGOS, health and wellness, supervised recreation and daily devotions will be featured.   • A benefit fundraiser for Jerry W. "Spaceman" Songer, a terminal cancer patient, will begin at noon July 11 at Loudendale Freewill Baptist Church, located on the left, a half-mile before the Kanawha State Forest entrance. Groups appearing will be David and Tommy Griffith; Jay Humphrey and Family; a special group with Jay Humphrey, Mark Humphrey, Dede Pauley and Rita Parker; along with a variety of different singers and groups. Complimentary food and beverages will be featured. The fundraiser is being given by Carolyn Billanti and co-workers of Focus One Inc.
  • The Biblically based Kanawha Creation Science Group will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Rand Community Center, 5701 Church Drive in Rand, to uplift Jesus Christ as the Creator. A creation science video and discussion will be featured. Officers should arrive at 6 p.m. for the business meeting and prayer. To get to the Rand Community Center, take exit 96 off Interstate 64 East/77 South and proceed to the Malden Rand exit. Go down under the underpass and make a left on Midland Drive, toward Rand/Belle. Travel approximately 2 miles and turn right onto Harvard Avenue. Go one block and turn left on Church Drive where the community center is located.   • The West Virginia premier showing of "The Shadow Effect," featuring Deepak Chopra, Debbie Ford, Marianne Williamson, James Van Praagh, Mark Victor Hansen, Dr. David Simon, Dr. Jason Deitch and other inspired teachers, will be shown at 1, 3:30 and 6 p.m. today at The AUS Church, 429 Third Ave., South Charleston.   • Morris Enrichment Center of Morris Memorial Church, 4615 MacCorkle Ave., Kanawha City, will sponsor a fundraising multiple-family yard sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. today in the gymnasium. Hot dogs and baked goods will be sold, rain or shine. Proceeds will be used to purchase new playground equipment for the church and childcare center.
  • Abundant Life Ministries, 1634 Washington St. E., will host a free lunch program June 29-31 for all youth up to 18 years of age. Lunch will be served at noon, Monday through Friday, during those dates. For more information, call Elder Kathy Clark at 304-342-0058, ext. 6.
  • Freedom Baptist Church will have a block party from 6 to 8 p.m. July 15 at the church, 6602 Roosevelt Ave. Inflatable games, snow cones, cotton candy, games and prizes will be featured for the whole family. There is no charge. Directions to the church: From Interstate 77, exit 95, turn right onto MacCorkle Ave. E. Pass the Kmart in Kanawha City and turn left onto 66th Street.   • A Walk for Jesus Rally will be held at 8:30 a.m. July 11 at Shawnee Park in Dunbar. Free prizes, free food and drinks will be available. Bring a chair, blanket and umbrella in case of light rain. There is no shelter. Children must be supervised while playing on the playground. Restrooms are available. In case of stormy weather (thunder/lightning), the date will be moved to July 18 at the same time and location.   • The Fourth Annual Gospel Singin' at the Lake, Sing No. 1, will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Mountain Lake Campground Amphitheater located on Airport Road at Summersville Lake (between the airport and marina.) In case of rain, the sing will be moved under the pavilion. Local groups will be singing and admission is free. Seating is available or you can bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on. Food and refreshments will be available. The sing is presented by REACH By FAITH Ministries.
  • Miller Family Plus will be singing at 7 p.m. Sunday at The Meadowbrook Freewill Baptist Church located on W.Va. 114 North.
  • Southern gospel recording artist Ivan Parker will perform at 8 p.m. Sunday at the St. Albans Riverfest, St. Albans. Parker has spent more than two and a half decades ministering in churches and arenas. He has been regularly featured on the Bill Gaither Homecoming Video and Concert Series, and has more than 13 solo recordings to his credit. Inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in 1993, he has received more than 20 soloist and male vocalist of the year awards from a variety of leading fan and trade publications, including the 2007 Fan Award for Male Vocalist of the Year by subscribers of The Singing News Magazine, Southern Gospel Music's leading fan and trade publication.
  • The 29th Annual Blue Bell Park Gospel Sing with singles and duets will begin at 5 p.m. Aug. 21 at Blue Bell Park. Trios and quartets will sing at 4 p.m. on Aug. 22. The 29th homecoming service will be held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 23 with a dinner following the service and singing by The Laborers Quartet. There is no charge. Bring lawn chairs. A concession stand will be open and all proceeds will be used for next year's sing. Directions to the park: from Charleston take U.S. 60 East to the Cedar Grove exit. Proceed ahead on Kelly's Creek Road for approximately 12 miles. Pass the communities of Ward and Mammoth to Blue Bell Roadside Park. Follow signs. 
  • Red Oak Christian Community Church, Red Oak Drive, Nitro, will have a song and prayer service at 7 p.m. today at the church. The Doug Humphreys Trio will perform.
  • Happy Valley Boys will sing at 10:30 a.m. today at the Armco gathering in Nellis.
  • The Believers Quartet will be singing at 6 p.m. today at Otter Lick Community Church. They will also sing at 7 p.m. Sunday at Community Chapel Church in Cross Lanes. 
  • John Phillips will be singing at 6 p.m. Sunday at Parsons Chapel, Sixth Avenue.
  • Shrewsbury Baptist Church, 1096 Ferry St., Shrewsbury, will have a gospel benefit sing in support of the late Lisa Grubb at 4 p.m. today at the church. Harvest Trio, The Browns, Heavens Note, Jimmy McKnight and others will perform. A hot dog and bake sale will also be held.
