Advertiser

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Pocahontas County continues to have the highest unemployment rate in West Virginia, despite a decline of 2.8 percentage points in May.

Figures released Monday by Workforce West Virginia show Pocahontas County's unemployment rate fell from 19 percent in April to 17.2 percent.

Pocahontas County was among 10 counties reporting a drop in unemployment rates in May. The others were Braxton, Greenbrier, Monroe, Pleasants, Tucker, Tyler, Upshur, Webster and Wetzel counties.

Monongalia County's 4.7 percent unemployment rate was the lowest in the state.

Perhaps indicating why unemployment is high, wouldn't a drop from 19 to 17.2 be a drop of 1.8, rather than a drop of 2.8? Basic math, folks.

It is no surprise that Pocahontas County has few job prospects for the unemployed. The answer now, as it has been in the past, is for workers to leave the county to find work elsewhere. It is no answer to wring hands, say "How sad!", and issue more welfare checks. Young men and women can be encouraged with education and social assistance to look for good jobs in places where they may be available. Back home will become a nature preserve at which it is most suitable.
