St. Albans councilman questions gas repairs

ST. ALBANS, W.Va. -- St. Albans City Council members will ask Mountaineer Gas Company to hasten street restorations following gas line repairs in the city.

At Monday's council meeting, Councilman Desper Lemon said the gas company has been negligent in leaving roads unfinished, and some of these roads pose a danger to public safety.

Lemon reported one pothole on Charm Street to be about 5 feet wide and 4 to 6 inches deep. In places where roads have been patched, the jobs have not been completed correctly, he said.

Crews have not laid down cement under the asphalt to ensure durability of the patchwork, Lemon said. Without cement, the asphalt does not stay in place, which causes loose debris to litter roads while potholes remain uncorrected, he said.

Also, council named the members of the newly appointed storm water task force to investigate the severe flash floods in May: city engineer Greg Belcher, Councilman Jerry Cogar, Orville Browning and Aaron Truit from the city's public works department, Municipal Utilities Commission employee Clayton Pretty and citizens Mark Foster and Gary Hager.

Hager was appointed during Monday's meeting after he addressed council members with follow-up questions regarding flood damage on Monmouth Street. Hager was among the most vocal residents at the last meeting, a couple of days after the floods.

The task force will determine who was responsible for the floods, and what can be done to improve the city's flood drainage system.

Also, the city agreed to give the Kanawha County Solid Waste Authority $10,000 to keep the recycling center on Slack Street in Charleston up and running.
