Workers from Orders Construction take down the old Clay Center parking lot sign Monday at the northeast corner of Leon Sullivan Way and Washington Street. After about 10 years of planning and property acquisition, the Charleston Area Alliance has started construction of the Gateway Greenspace there. Contractors last week broke up concrete which will be used to fill a wall at the back of the site. TerraCare is scheduled to plant trees and shrubs in late October, and all work should be complete by year's end.
