Fayette man charged with murder in disabled son's death

FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. -- An Oak Hill man has been arrested on charges that he killed his disabled son last year, the Fayette County Sheriff's Office announced Wednesday.

Henry Clay Jenkins, 35, allegedly failed to seek timely aid for his 14-year-old son, who had cystic fibrosis, when the boy passed out with respiratory distress at the Mountainair Mobile Home Park in Hilltop on Nov. 14, the news release states.

The boy was put on life support at Charleston Area Medical Center, where he died five days later, according to the release.

A joint investigation by the Child Protective Services division of the state Department of Health and Human Resources, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the Fayette County Sheriff's Department led to charges of murder by a parent, guardian or custodian being filed against Jenkins.

An autopsy indicated that "the use of illicit drugs" contributed to the boy's death, the release states.

Fayette County Sheriff Steve Kessler said autopsy results showed opiates in the boy's system that were not prescribed. Authorities believe Jenkins gave the boy oxycodone.

"It was also determined through this investigation that prompt medical attention had not been sought for this child following the initial discovery of the child's respiratory distress," according to the release.

Deputies took Jenkins into custody without incident on Wednesday.

Are you people serious? This is the life of a 14 yr old child not a story from a Lifetime movie! The words in the news paper clearly state that this father was charged with the killing of his son because he gave this boy a strong pain medication that WAS NOT prescribed for this boy.The autopsy showed that the use of illicit drugs were found to be the cause of his death so this is probably not the first time that this father used drugs with his son.Yes,he had an illness but it has not been found that it was the cause of death(the use of drugs is the cause). If the teen was in pain then it would have been up to his doctor to prescribe the pain medication for him NOT the father.not even my self knows the real truth I am only going by what i have read but my point being is that you people are on this assisted suicide thing that is more than likely NOT the case.Although, now this drug pusher father has a defense to use when his trial starts which is the Assisted suicide but it wont go very far

Wait. What part of this story said that it was an assisted suicide?Yes,the child had an illness but the father gave his 14 yr old son a very strong pain medication that was not prescribed for the child.Unless you have personal knowledge of the situation then you should not assume it was an assisted suicide. I know for a fact the "father"gave this child drugs such as pain medication and marijuana on occasions because I witnessed it a couple of times so I feel that the charge against this man is relevant.no it was not intentional BUT he did give his teen son medication that he had no right doing.also, he failed to get help for his son immediatly therfore he should be held accountable for his actions.Look up his criminal record.it is very sad that this family is hurting because there are two other children that suffer as well with out their brother all because of the bad choice the "father "made.

I sincerely hope that if I ever live with so much pain that I lose quality of life that someone has the compassion to put me out of my misery. I certainly hope I ever become a burden for my child and/or family that assisted suicide is legal in this state and there will be someone willing to “assist” me.

If someone wants to be allowed to die, shouldn't that be their choice? Shouldn't that ultimate decision be between a person and their God, or lack thereof?
