Berkeley teacher fired over sex allegations
Advertiser
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- A Berkeley County teacher has been fired after she was accused of sexually abusing one of her students.
Superintendent Manny Arvon says evidence presented at a recent hearing convinced the school board to fire 27-year-old Stephanie Jo Walters, a teacher at Musselman Middle School.
Walters has been on administrative leave since April 22. She was arrested May 1 on charges of sexual abuse by a person in a position of trust. Police say Walters sent text messages to a male student and is accused of kissing him in a janitor's closet.

Anyhow, even though things like this are technically crimes, our society acts a little ridiculous about teenager/adult sexual allegations. Like the 20-something guy at the vo-tech who had a relationship with the (nearly adult) 16 or 17 year old girl. Those cases are really not worthy of branding someone a "sex offender" (another far overused term) and throwing someone in jail. You can't judge these cases as a whole - the specifics really do matter.
Sex offenders are people who actively pursue and molest children - not someone who gets involved with a mature teenager, and not someone who takes a leak outside somewhere. This woman isn't a sex offender, and putting that mark on people like her, who aren't child molesters, really dilutes the definition of a sex offender. This is not what the classification was intended to mean.
Still feel the same way, I pray not. This is a crime. We as adults should react accordingly and demand this woman be tried and if convicted, put away to protect other children.
