HAMLIN, W.Va. -- A Lincoln County man has been arrested for allegedly murdering his live-in girlfriend on May 7.

State Police Senior Trooper N.W. Samples and Hamlin Police Department Patrolman Brian Lawrence responded to a 911 complaint of a suicide on May 7 around 1 a.m.

They found Veronda Hidalgo, 49, of Hamlin, dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Her live-in boyfriend, David L. Cooper, 50, was at the house when officers arrived, according to police.

The officers found a handgun lying near the victim. Police continued to investigate the case, and almost a week later arrested Cooper for the first-degree murder of Hidalgo.

Cooper was taken to Western Regional Jail, where he was being held without bond Thursday.
