ROCKY MOUNT, Va. -- A Franklin County judge has ordered that a special grand jury be impaneled to determine whether there has been criminal activity in the Sheriff's Department.

Circuit Judge William Alexander's order was unsealed Thursday. It orders the panel to investigate employee compensation and handling of evidence.

The judge's order, issued at the request of a special prosecutor, does not say specifically what the grand jury will look into.

Virginia State Police have been investigating whether Sheriff Ewell Hunt's daughter was paid for hours she didn't work at her job with the department.

Hunt has said his daughter, a student at Concord University in West Virginia, was properly paid for work she performed as an administrative assistant.
