WALTON, W.Va. -- The 67-year-old cut-stone building was once a school and a personal-care home, and it was sold Saturday for $125,000 to a Walton resident.
Doug Groves, one of the owners of Mountaineer Auctions, conducted Saturday's auction. Considering all the recent rainy weather, he said they had a good turnout.
The community of Walton is located in Roane County not far from the Kanawha County line.
In its school days, it was called Walton High School. In its last incarnation, it was called the Walton Inn and served as a personal-care home.
When it served as a personal-care home, the owners conducted extensive renovations that included a $180,000 hydraulic elevator.
Groves said Danny Starcher bought the building, but Starcher does not have a plan for it immediately.
"He told me he just did not want to see the old high school torn down," Groves said.
When he conducted the auction, Groves said they split the property into two parcels. The first contained the former school. The second parcel contained the former football field.
Groves said Reedy resident Kathelyn Fields bought the second part for $80,000.
She wants to use her section for a horse stable. This section comprises more than 5 acres and includes some outbuildings and a horse barn.
