The fire at 10 C Ave. in Madison started at about 2 a.m. on Wednesday, according to the Fire Marshal's Office.

This is an uncommon occurence. Those of us in the volunteer fire service look down upon these type of mutant idiots. Percentage wise, bad apples are a very very small fraction of the volunteer fire service and we usually weed them out early on. These 3 morons must have slipped through. Please, don't judge all of us by a few.

It is a shame that this occured. Three "kids" trying to live in an adult's world as firefighters. However, please take into account the countless firefighters that protect you every day that would not stoop so low to do anything like this. Even us in the fire service think these people are !&*! and feel that they should jack the jail up and put them under it. The fact that they set a fire in an occupied building far overshadows the fact that most firefighters that are caught in arson situations usually pick abandoned structures where the chance of injuries and death are not present. When these yoyos started this one, you would have had a great chance of injuries or deaths to the residents, plus the firefighters who would have risked their lives responding to the call and searching for the occupants. Give all three of them what they deserve, a long stay at a correctional facility.

Has anyone ever run the numbers on this? I would be surprised if volunteer firefighters in WV don't burn down more buildings they they save, don't cost us more than they can ever pay back by their dubious firefighting efforts. Of course, our legislature, in its wisdom, is now trying to pay pensions to these sterling citizens.

The National Volunteer Fire Council is committed to putting and end to firefighter arson. While little is known about the extent of firefighter arson, enough is known to indicate that it is a problem.

Additionally, research has shown that many states do little in terms of awareness and prevention. Perhaps most important, studies have found that many of the tools needed to combat this problem are already in the hands of most chiefs and departments.

An emphasis on education about the costs and consequences of arson and closer screening of new applicants are key prevention measures to keep new recruits from becoming arsonists. Unfortunately, this sometimes is not the case within the volunteer fire departments.
