CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Two Raleigh County firefighters were seriously injured on Tuesday after their fire truck rolled over on the West Virginia Turnpike.
Jason Hiser, a firefighter with the Bradley-Prosperity Volunteer Fire Department, was ejected from the front passenger seat of the truck, according to a statement from Bruce W. James, the department's chief.
Hiser had a broken pelvis and a dislocated hip. He underwent surgery at Charleston Area Medical Center on Wednesday morning and was listed in critical condition on Wednesday afternoon.
Allen Robinson, from the Mount Hope Fire Department, was taken to Raleigh General Hospital with two fractured vertebrae in his back and a laceration to his head, according to James. He was originally in the intensive care unit, but was transferred on Wednesday and was in stable condition.
The engine, from the Bradley-Prosperity Volunteer Fire Department and driven by Capt. Cindy James, was en route to an accident in the Turnpike's southbound lanes around noon, according to Chief James.
He said the engine got on the Turnpike going north, then got to a median crossover and headed south. But a passing motorist signaled to them that they were headed the wrong way, and in fact needed to go north.
The engine crossed over again and headed north. But at the 47.5-mile marker, the engine started to hydroplane. The driver tried to correct the skid, but the engine's rear wheel hit gravel and the truck rolled over.
According to Chief James, the crew of another truck that saw the accident said it "looked like the truck exploded in air."
The truck's driver, Cindy James, was treated and released from Raleigh General. Another firefighter on the truck, J.K. Tyree of the Bradley-Prosperity department, was held overnight for observation at Raleigh General and was scheduled to be released Wednesday.
State Police from the Turnpike detachment are investigating the incident.
