Scholarships make camp possible for kids

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- "I had this one 12-year-old camper in my cabin last summer who was a total sweetheart," wrote YMCA Camp Horseshoe counselor Brittany Betler of Parsons.

"She was so nice to all the other campers and just a really great kid, so I was concerned when a couple days into camp, she seemed sad and upset. I took her for a walk to try and distract her, and then we sat in the grass to talk.

"She told me about her family, how much her parents fought and how angry her dad would get with her, and she told me how she helped her mom around the house and with her baby brother.

"She was just a little girl, but she had so many responsibilities and worries. I talked to her about how camp was somewhere she could relax and be herself, without worrying or being stressed, and in the days after our talk, she made a point of telling me how much better she was feeling and how much fun she was having. Camp was the one place where she got to be herself, and where she got to be a kid."

Without scholarships, attending summer camp wouldn't be possible for many local children.

Camp Horseshoe, located in Parsons, offers one-week residential camps for children ages 7 through 12. Camp dates are June 28-July 4; July 5-11; July 12-18; and July 19-25. Cost to attend is $350 per week.

Hi-Y has requested funding for 20 partial scholarships at a cost of $50 per child, or a total of $1,000. For more information on the camp, contact Camp Director Doug Wetsch at 304-478-2481 or horses...@hi-y.org, or visit them online at www.hi-y.org.
