The Kellys Creek and Northwestern Railroad was built in 1902 and ran from Cedar Grove to Ward.
The only commodity the railroad carried was coal and plenty of it.
On a good day, about 150 cars interchanged with the New York Central at Cedar Grove and the coal went into barges on the Kanawha River. This big steam locomotive of the 2-8-0 type is seen sometime in the 1940s.
If this engine existed today, it would be highly valued by tourist railroads but sadly it went to the junkyard long ago.
