Fenton Glass pauses operations for month

WILLIAMSTOWN, W.Va. -- West Virginia arts glassmaker Fenton Glass says it will cease production for a month because of the recession.

Fenton President George Fenton said furloughs of the company's 120 employees are scheduled to begin Monday. Not all workers are to be off the job at the same time, but Fenton said everyone would be affected by the furlough.

The plant isn't expected to resume production until May 8.

Fenton said the company is taking the time off because it has caught up with production orders.

He adds that this may not be the only production stoppage this year.

The company furloughed workers a couple of times last year in an effort to control costs.

He said the company's gift shop will remain open, but tours of the plant will be canceled.
