CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation Board of Trustees has approved 24 individual arts, culture and education grants for a total of $196,978.
The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation's mission is to improve the quality of life and promote philanthropy in the Kanawha Valley. It serves a six-county region that includes Kanawha, Putnam, Clay, Fayette, Lincoln and Boone counties.
The first-quarter grants go to:
Anne Bailey Elementary School, $4,000, to assist with the addition of a multimedia center for integration of the school's curriculum.
Appalachian Children's Chorus, $4,000, in support for the children's choral festival held Memorial Day Weekend.
Appalachian Community Partners, $13,585, for an after-school education program for rural at-risk youths in the Upper Kanawha Valley and western Fayette County during the school year.
Appalachian Leadership & Education Foundation, $4,450, to recruit and educate young people who might find college unattainable. The focus will be to develop leadership and academic skills needed for college.
Arts in Action, $7,500, a weeklong day camp for youths ages 5-19 to have the opportunity to discover their artistic passion through a variety of mediums, including dance, art, drama, music, puppetry and sign language.
Bob Burdette Center Inc., $10,000, to provide for the Charleston West Side after-school program.
Charleston Ballet Inc., $5,486, to provide assistance with costume acquisition to add to their permanent collection.
Charleston Civic Chorus, $1,500, to help support the 2009 concert season.
Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences, $15,000, to create museum admission fee waivers for participating schools in Boone, Clay, Fayette and Lincoln counties.
Clay County Parents As Teachers, $5,000, to assist with funding for family group meetings and home visits.
Clay County 4-H Leader's Association, $3,025, to provide scholarships for Clay County youths to attend the summer camp program.

Lincoln County 4-H Leaders Association, $7,000, for the Energy Express Summer Program to be provided at the Duval/Griffithsville area, Hamlin and Big Ugly Community Center in Lincoln County.
Pro-Kids Inc., $6,000, to provide materials and general support for an after-school program for East End children.
River City Youth Ballet, $6,000, in funding for the 2009-2010 season.
West Virginia Music Hall of Fame, $10,000, to assist with a traveling music exhibit that will visit schools.
West Virginia Public Broadcasting Foundation Inc., $10,000, to provide support for "Mountain Stage."
West Virginia State University Research & Development Corp., $10,732, to assist with the Hip-Hop Boot Camp, a camp for youths in grades 6-12 that provides an urban 4-H experience.
West Virginia Symphony Orchestra, $12,000, for transportation and admission waivers for schoolchildren to attend the May 16 performance of "La bohème."
West Virginia Youth Symphony, $2,560, to fund the Sectional Instruction Program, which provides the West Virginia Youth Symphony student musicians individualized instruction with expert musicians as coaches.
West Virginia Women Work, $7,000, to fund personnel and program expenses for Step-Up for Women classes. These classes are designed to teach construction skills and also help participants overcome many barriers to nontraditional employment.
