Scouts earn awards
Gov. Joe Manchin recognized three Girl Scout Bronze Award recipients on March 3 at the state Capitol. Hannah Little, Haley McCallister and Paige Stewart of Clay County earned their Girl Scout Bronze Award by planning and implementing a service project for Operation Smile. The girl's troop leader is Marge Bragg.
Operation Smile works with volunteers worldwide to provide free surgeries to repair childhood facial deformities including cleft lips and cleft palates. The Junior Girl Scouts from Troop 5136 in Clay County connected with doctors and other organizations to recruit help in collecting items for surgery patients. They also made blankets for the patients. The girls collected specific items requested by Operation Smile - mirrors, combs, crayons, coloring books - for patient gift bags. The dollar value of the items they collected will make possible 18 to 20 surgeries.
