Rabid raccoon found in Mineral County

FORT ASHBY, W.Va. -- Authorities say they've found the second case of rabies in Mineral County this year.

County animal control spokeswoman Melissa Kidwell says a rabid raccoon was found on the porch of a Fort Ashby residence. Test results Thursday showed the animal had rabies.

Kidwell says two dogs that had contact with the raccoon are going to be quarantined for 45 days. Although the dogs had been vaccinated, the quarantine is designed to make sure the dogs don't have rabies.

The latest rabies case comes just days after a cat that attacked a man in his yard near the Lakewood area of Mineral County tested positive for rabies. The man is being treated.

Rabies is a virus that if left untreated can be fatal.
