Bluefield police officer dies in off-duty wreck
MONTCALM, W.Va. -- A veteran Bluefield police officer has died in an off-duty vehicle accident near Montcalm.
Mercer County sheriff's deputy A.M. Ballard says 42-year-old Sgt. John A. Jones' vehicle ran off the road, hit a tree and caught on fire. The accident occurred early Sunday morning on Lorton Lick Road.
Bluefield police Lt. D.M. Dillow says Jones was pronounced dead at the scene. The body has been sent to the State Medical Examiners Office in Charleston.
Jones had been a member of the Bluefield Police Department for 18 years.
Police Chief J.W. Wilson says Jones' death is a loss to the community as well as to the department.
