St. John Missionary Baptist Church on Morris Drive will celebrate Black History Month at 3 p.m. Sunday. The Martin Luther King Jr. Male Chorus will be in concert. The program will be in memory of Beverly Wattie, who passed away in August.
Church of God in Christ of Charleston, 3001 Seventh Ave., will feature a Men's Clinic 2009 from March 25-28, which ministers to the unseen abuses of men. Speakers include Dr. Earl Rogers, Elder Bobby Thomas, Bishop Melvin Mosley, Bishop Jeffery Reed, Pastor Donald Conner and Elder Derrick Gibson. Seminars are held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on March 26 and 27. Evening service will be held at 7 p.m. daily March 25-28. A prayer breakfast will be held at 9 a.m. on March 28. St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 405 B Street, St. Albans, will have a Mardi Gras celebration featuring traditional Mardi Gras food from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at the church. The meal/ticket cost: choice of two Creole entrees, coleslaw and a drink for $8 for adults and $5 for children age 10 and under. The celebration is sponsored by the Episcopal Church Women to welcome in the Lenten season. Arts, crafts, antiques, baked goods and collectibles will also be for sale. A Mardi Gras parade begins at 2 p.m. in the gymnasium of the church, where Mardi Gras beads, masks and other accoutrements will be available for sale. The goal is to raise $2,000 for the St. Marks ECW ministries. Supported programs include Christ's Kitchen, an ecumenical kitchen that serves free meals six days a week at the Episcopal Church in St. Albans. The ECW also contributes to a local food pantry, Christmas baskets and other programs for the needy in the St. Albans area. For more information, call 304-722-4284.

"Discover the Power Within You" classes will be held at 12:30 p.m. each Sunday now through April 5 at Unity of Kanawha Valley, 3102 Blaine Blvd. The classes are based on the book "Discover the Power Within You" by Eric Butterworth and are taught by Pam Hawley Grady, Licensed Unity Teacher. The Standing True Trio will be singing at 7 p.m. Sunday at The Meadowbrook Freewill Baptist Church located on W.Va. 114 North.
The 12th Annual Capitol City Gospel Sing will be held at 6:45 p.m. March 27 in the Municipal Auditorium, downtown Charleston. Featured singers will be: award-winning Inspirations of Bryson, N.C.; Primitive Quarter of Chandler, N.C.; Good Shepherd Quartet and Mike Upright with Standing Tall from Penrose, N.C. All seats are reserved. There are a number of limited Artist Circle Seats for $20; main floor is $18; balcony seats are $16. Group tickets of 20 or more will receive two free tickets and must be purchased at the Charleston Civic Center office only. Good Shepherd Free Will Baptist Church will have praise and worship services on Sunday. Pastor Jason Black will be preaching at the 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. services. Metropolitan Baptist Church will have a Youth Praise and Worship Service at 6 p.m. Sunday. Guest preacher will be Minister Lameshia McNeil of Church of God MPG of Truth.
Metropolitan Baptist Church will have a special Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. Wednesday, the first day of Lent. The church will be preparing and observing a 40-day period of fasting and special studies on listening and reading of God's Word.
The Rev. Dr. Zamekio Jackson, President of the Saint Thomas Christian College of Jacksonville, Fla., will be the guest speaker at the 6 p.m. Sunday service at the Liberty Missionary Baptist Church, 1343 Lewis St. The Rev. Dr. Jackson will conduct a service to confer upon Pastor Lloyd A. Hill the Honorary Doctoral Degree of Divinity.
