CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Locations and performers were announced Thursday for events at 13 sites for the annual GoodNight Celebration in Charleston.

The New Year's Eve 2008 event marks the 14th year that Charleston Community Music Association has produced this free, family-oriented evening of entertainment.

"The first year we had six locations, 12 acts and a couple thousand people. It's estimated that about 10,000 people attended the festivities last year," Jody Connell, co-chairman of the 2008 event, said in a news release.

"With many of the old favorites returning and a number of new acts, we are certain our Charlestonians and guests will have a memorable evening to welcome 2008."

Performances begin at 6 p.m. and each will last about 45 minutes, with a 15-minute break to allow people to change locations. The last series of shows begins at 9 p.m.

Thirty-one performing groups, including nine new groups, will be entertaining throughout the evening. Among the entertainers will be the 2008 West Virginia Symphony Idol winner Ryan Hardiman, Clendenin Community Chorus, and gospel singer Ethel Caffie-Austin.

Community Music Association is a nonprofit, all-volunteer local organization that has been bringing entertainment to Charleston for 75 years.

The city of Charleston's support for the GoodNight celebration includes free parking until 11 p.m. in the garage next to City Hall and at the Civic Center. KRT donates two city trolleys to provide continuous free transportation among the locations.

"GoodNight represents the best of what our residents in Charleston can accomplish to add to the quality of life in our city," said Mayor Danny Jones.

"We have some gifted, amazing entertainers and talent here - and they are so generous to donate their time for our enjoyment. It is a wholesome time when we can all celebrate together, enjoy and enrich the lives of our citizens and guests from around the country."

GoodNight schedules are available at City Hall, Town Center Mall's information desk, Charleston Newspapers front desk, West Virginia Radio Corp., several downtown merchants and hotels, and the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The Charleston Gazette will print the schedule periodically as well as post it on its Web site.
