  • Preceptor Alpha Chapter Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Parish House of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Kanawha Turnpike, Spring Hill. President Ann Stone will have a board meeting at 6:30 p.m. and the general meeting will follow. Mary Ellis will present the program. Refreshments will be served. Service is personal items for the Veteran's Home in Barboursville, tabs for Ronald McDonald House and containers for Manna Meal. Items for Christmas baskets for the church will be collected for next month.
  • The city of Charleston's Mayor's Office of Economic and Community Development's last public meeting to get citizen input toward development of the city's 2009-10 Annual Action Plan for Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), HOME and Emergency Shelter Grant funds, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the City Service Center Conference Room located at 915 Quarrier St. An application workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Nov. 14 in the City Service Center Conference Room, 915 Quarrier St. MOECD staff will provide step-by-step instructions on completing the application form.   • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Support Group will meet from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at South Charleston Middle School. Topics will be "Discipline and Reading Strategies to Help Your Child with Homework" and "Learning Through Listening." Meetings are open to all parents, educators and community members. Staff Development credit is available.
  • West Virginia State Treasurer's Office and the Hartford SMART529 announce that the deadline for the second annual West Virginia "When I Grow Up" contest deadline is Friday. Students from kindergarten through the fifth grade can submit short essays on what they want to be when they grow up. Three age group winners will be judged. Fifteen winners will be awarded $500 college savings accounts; one will receive an additional $4,500 SMART529 scholarship. Entry forms are available at www.SMART529.com and at elementary schools.
  • Charleston Area Alliance and Community and Technical College System of West Virginia offer TechKnowledge, a set of four classes to teach employees how to get the most out of Microsoft programs. Classes focus on Microsoft Word, Friday; Excel, Nov. 21; Access, Dec. 5; and PowerPoint, Dec. 19. All classes are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Alliance office, 1116 Smith St. Fees for the entire course are $75 for Alliance members and $90 for non-members; per-class fees are $30 for members and $40 for non-members.   • West Virginia Aging and Disability Resource Center and WVSU Metro Area Agency on Aging will sponsor an "Extra Help Enrollment" event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Charleston Town Center Food Court. People may qualify to receive extra help paying for prescription drugs or Medicare premiums if their monthly income is below $1,300 for an individual or below $1,750 for a married couple.   • Kanawha Trail Club will meet for a hike at French Creek Game Farm and Audra State Park on Saturday. Carpool from Ohio and Randolph streets. The hikes are about 3 miles in each park. Both hikes are easy. Eat lunch in Buckhannon afterwards. For information, call 343-3779.
  • Arthritis Foundation will have a free Exercise Program Leader Training session from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 13 in the Davis Square building, corner of Capitol and Washington streets.
