Glen Ferris Inn owners weigh offers

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - A historic Fayette County inn is for sale, and it could close its doors to vacationers and open them to people recovering from addictions.

Owners Dan and Becky Hill of The Glen Ferris Inn are considering buyers for the 18-guestroom hotel and restaurant in the small town of Glen Ferris.

"We've had the inn up for sale for several years," Becky Hill said. "I just need to free up some time and spend time with my family. You can't ever walk away from the inn."

Hill said five parties have expressed interest in buying the three-story brick hotel, but no final decisions have been made. She said a decision might come late next month.

Four potential buyers would like to continue operating the hotel, while a fifth would like to convert it to a drug rehabilitation facility, she said.

"We're considering all of the offers," she said.

The historic red brick inn with white-columned veranda is located off U.S. 60 near Gauley Bridge. It overlooks the Kanawha River Falls and is a popular venue for weddings, conferences and tourists visiting Fayette County, said Fayette County Clerk Kelvin Holliday.

Built as a private home in the early 1800s, The Glen Ferris Inn was opened to travelers by salt entrepreneur Aaron Stockton in 1839. The Inn served as a Union quartermaster's depot in the Civil War, according to the Midland Trail Scenic Highway Association. The inn is listed on the National Register of Historic Places,

"It's just such a beautiful setting. I've attended numerous functions there, and it would be quite a difference in the landscape without it," Holliday said. "There's just a lot of beauty and serenity and history in particular. It really is a special place."

If you allow that beautiful historic landmark be turned into a crack rehab house, they will destroy it. Just look at the new crack rehab houses, they look as if they are hundreds of years old. Can't this steroid enhanced football playing Governor put a stop to this lunacy?

My family drove by this beautiful setting on the way to the highlands for thirty years and the survivors(long dispersed) still think of it as the kind of place where time stands still. But time never stands still. Yankee Stadium will be razed this winter. These posts are compelling evidence that an addiction facility is needed in the area, and all of us are aware of the collateral costs of ignoring the problem. How about a little support for the good people of Fayette County.

I also "had" a family member that could have used a rehab center. We tried to get him help for his problem, but there was no help. Do you know what it is like to set with someone day and night watching him melt away? He did just that - he melted away in the dark lonely night. Fortunately his pain is gone but I think of all the others out there fighing for their life wishing that they never picked up the first drug - and there are plenty- who is setting day and night watching their loved one melt away. We need a place that we can get assistance. We tried - the state doesn't care - all they say is "sorry". I hope this center does open. It is too late for my family - what's gone is gone" but if there is a chance of helping someone else through this facility I hope it pans out.

I have a family member who needs to be in a rehab center. The ones that I have checked with are either full or are so far away that I cannot get him there. Having a facility close would be a god-send! I hope that getting the facility in this area does happen. I will be first in line to sign him in for the needed help that he wants and deserves. He can't beat this disease on his own - he needs help and he wants help!
