A United States Marine from Charleston died earlier this week after suffering wounds during combat operations in Afghanistan, according to a U.S. Department of Defense news release.

Capt. Garrett T. Lawton, 31, of Charleston, was wounded in Afghanistan's Haret Province on Monday "while supporting combat operations," according to the news release.

He was based at Camp Lejuene, N.C., and was assigned to the 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, according to a news release from the U.S. Marine Corps.

Lawton joined the Marines on June 3, 1996, and had received several awards and medals, according to the Marines.

Garrett was my best friend. I will miss him tremendously. He graduated from WVU in 1999 with dual BS degrees in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. He was from Beaufort, SC, not Charleston, WV. He was an amazing person and a great Marine. My heart goes out to his wife and two boys, 4 and 6, and his family.

My prayers go out to this family, this should have been top headline news. I think we have forgotten we have troops across seas,it the danger zone, like it or not, we need to support them. When is the last time you heard of agency/group whoever asking for donations to send carepackages to all soliders. I hope the city/state does somthing special to honor this fallen solider. May God Bless the Family.
