Poker robbery suspects among Putnam indictments

A Kenova woman accused of robbing a group of men at gunpoint during a poker game and a Scott Depot pastor accused of sexually assaulting four girls were among 34 people indicted this week by a Putnam County grand jury.

In November, Jacqueline M. Dennis, 28, allegedly stole $27,000 from six men taking part in a high stakes poker game in a storage unit behind a bar along W.Va. 34.

Dennis and Kimberly Steinbrecher, allegedly dressed in camouflage and robbed the men with semiautomatic pistols. According to the complaint, Dennis knew about the game because she had a relationship with one of the players.

Dennis was on the run for about two weeks before turning herself in to Huntington police. Steinbrecher turned herself in a few days before Dennis did.

Putnam Prosecuting Attorney Mark Sorsaia would not comment on why Steinbrecher's case was not presented to the grand jury. He would say only that the "investigation is ongoing."

Paul D. Smeltzer, 41, allegedly videotaped himself sexually abusing three relatives who were staying at his house on McCloud Road in Scott Depot. He also is accused of sexually assaulting a different female relative on a separate occasion.

Smeltzer has been arrested twice on charges that he sexually abused female relatives: first in May 2007, and again in March.

In March, a Putnam grand jury indicted him on charges related to those allegations, but prosecutors dismissed the indictment after police discovered new evidence showing more girls might have been victimized.

A grand jury indictment is not a finding of guilt. It means that the grand jury believes there is enough evidence of a crime to merit a jury trail. The grand jury also indicted the following people:
